Gameplay
S.T.A.L.K.E.R .: Shadow of Chernobyl is a terrifying first-person video game survivor, but it also includes many RPG features. The player does not gain as much skill or stats as most RPGs (although the player improves by playing the game from "novice" to "expert" which has little to do with the ability to accurately point), but instead is allowed to attach artifacts that can enhance or diminish player skills. Internal artifacts have both positive and negative effects apart from other rare artifacts with only positive attributes.
There are a large number of items in the game, so the player has customizable options that are restricted primarily to how much they test. The game also attempts to combine storytelling and character interactions that are often associated with RPGs. However, the discussion branches are extremely limited and have little or no impact on the game path, other than accepting or rejecting missions. The Zone itself is a large and varied area, including desert, human settlements, and a few heavily guarded military bases. However, the game world is not a virtual reality world, but rather 18 different maps separated by loading screens. Transfers from one place to another can only be done in certain ways; sharp fences and excessive levels of radiation prevent the player from trying to skip the map anywhere. The creatures inside The Zone are very different from their real-world counterparts: dogs, pigs, crows, and much more. Additionally, some areas contain mutations that have been linked to the so-called Brain Scorcher. The ingenuity of wildlife is highly developed and reflects many realistic behaviors, such as food-fighting and packet thinking, which can be seen in unwritten events.

Development
The game was first announced by GSC Game World in November 2001, as the S.T.A.L.K.E.R .: Oblivion Lost, though it was mentioned in the early 2000s. Its release date, originally the summer of 2003, has been postponed several times. By that time, hundreds of game screens had been released, as well as twelve previews, along with other GSC promotions, such as inviting fans to their Kyiv offices to play the current production of the game. However, due to delays, some have considered the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to be vaporware.
