Dishonored is a 2012 action game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. Set in the fictional, plague-infested industrial city of Dunwall, Dishonored follows the story of Corvo Attan, the bodyguard of the Empress of the Isles. He is accused of her murder and forced to become an assassin seeking revenge on those who conspired against him. Corvo is aided in his quest by the Loyalists, a resistance group fighting to reclaim Dunwall, and the Outsider, a powerful being who grants Corvo magical abilities. Several well-known actors provided voice work for the game, including Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, Michael Madsen, John Slattery, Lena Headey, and Chloë Grace Moretz.

Gameplay

Dishonored is a first-person action-adventure game with an emphasis on stealth action and the use of gadgets and environments to eliminate enemy forces. The game world is a series of separate mission-focused areas designed for different ways of exploration in terms of in-game movement and abilities. Between missions, the player is transported to a central hub called the Hound Pits pub, where the player character Corvo can meet his allies, receive mission briefings and alternate objectives, and turn acquired loot into new equipment and upgrades. Game areas include loading docks, royal estates, poverty-stricken streets, and spas. The player can save their progress anywhere and the game features a checkpoint save system. Saving is prohibited during combat. The game has four difficulty levels that adjust the effectiveness of health and mana (magic) potions and enemy awareness, damage dealt, and responsiveness.

Dishonored features RPG elements such as the ability to upgrade abilities and make moral decisions with a focus on non-linear consequences. The game is designed to allow the player to complete it without killing non-player characters (NPCs), including boss characters and mission objectives. An example of a non-lethal situation given by co-creative designer Harvey Smith was when the player completed a side mission for a character and in return two of Corvo's targets were kidnapped and enslaved for that character. Each mission contains several ways to explore and achieve objectives. Level movement and exploration is designed to support the player character's abilities, rather than specific paths that are geared toward a specific playstyle, such as hacking or sneaking. Specific elements of the missions, such as changing the target's clothing color and mask in a single mission, are randomized, requiring the player to explore the game area and search the target each time the mission is played.

Dishonored was shown to the public at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and received four nominations from the Game Critics Awards for Best Action/Adventure Game, Best Console Game, Best Original Game, and Best of Show overall. The game was also awarded at the event for: "Game of Show" by GameSpy and Joystiq Editor-in-Chief Ludwig Keitzmann and was nominated by Destructoid and EGM; "Best Action Game" by GameSpy and EGM and nominated by Destructoid; "Editors' Choice Award for Best of E3 2012" by GameSpot; and "The Most Original Game" by G4TV.
